November 28th, 2007 - Ottawa - AKSEL has signed a contract with the Health Canada Library in Ottawa to upgrade their Inter-library Loan System. The project involves upgrading a system that has been in place for several years, originally designed in Foxbase. The system manages the library’s loan management system where books, articles and journals are loaned from major libraries and companies across the country. Using Visual FoxPro 9, AKSEL will enhance the system with an updated interface as well as several improvements, including an updated Internet facility to accommodate the availability of online journals.

Need to upgrade your legacy systems? Contact AKSEL for more details.

At AKSEL, we value developers. If we wanted people to write code, we can outsource that. Our people wear multiple hats - when a customer hires an AKSEL consultant, you can be sure that they can step in wherever needed and do whatever it takes to ensure the project succeeds. To that end, our developers , be they on contract or full time, should be able to fully understand and assist with:
# Spec documents
# Configuration management
# Code reviews
# Testing
# Automated tests
# Documentation
# Solving tough customer problems

The developer has a much larger perspective and an ability to see the bigger picture. The programmer writes code, throws it over the wall to the testers and waits for them to log bugs. The developer knows it is better to find an fix bugs now, since he just might be the one talking to the customer about it later.

But when push comes to shove, You can’t eliminate problems,
but you can make trades to get problems that you prefer over the ones you have now.

That’s not necessarily the way to come up with the perfect solution immediately but it is the way to provide customers with the solution they need as quickly as they can get it.

When looking for contractors, we look for developers. Sometimes we find them, sometimes we don’t. But if you want to work for AKSEL on a semi-regular process, realize that we’re not looking for the quick coded fix - we’re looking for a realization of what is being done, and the best way to do it.

The SednaX project has been filled so far with lots of talk and ideas but not a lot of direct output (this led Craig Berntsonto keep it off his 2005 highlights) but that’s about to change.

I interviewed Craig, Rick and Doug on what the plan is and how the 400+ developers who have signed up can start getting involved with this open Visual FoxPro community project.

As noted in the interview, it’s important to note that SednaX doesn’t have to rely on Dotnet components (although there may be some benefits there) and that each project will have its own timeline. It’s not a “packaged” solution - but more of a organization of several related projects.

We touch on the commercial vs. open aspect of the project as well - so commercial developers (such as Doug and Rick) can know what to expect from such a project.

What also struck me was Craig’s comment about “tricks up their sleeves” from the Fox team themselves - as things like source control are still being worked out, one can only imagine (at least my thought would be) what a great coup this would be if MS allowed the entire project to be driven from the Visual Studio Team system approach. It might give MS more credibility and visibility and it would benefit the Fox community as extra add-ons would be built to help integrate the two environments as Scott and Craig have talked about before.

As Craig has noted, we live in exciting times…

I picked up this tool to help with a corporate planning exercise two years ago and its ease of use completely changed the way I planned for meetings as well as simply wrote down notes.

Instead of using Outlook’s Notes, I use it instead. Now, Microsoft came out with OneNote a while ago which works in a similar fashion but it doesn’t do the linking the way that MindManager does.

Do yourself a favour and check it out.
